When the Tube came to Southfields in 1889, the place was farmland. Elegant terraced family homes like this one on Pirbright Road, popped up as part of the wave of suburban development which swept through the South East of England on the tide of Victorian industry.
By the end of the 19th Century, the format was well-established: a formal front ground-floor reception room, the kitchen at the back, master bedroom above. And while decor may have moved on, this home is a welcome reminder of how much London suburban idyll survives to the present day.
